Types of Carpet Flooring to Choose From

There are more than eight different types of carpeting. Some of them are more common than others because customers and homeowners like the way certain carpet types feel or because of their practical benefits. Four of the most popular types of carpet are low pile, plush, patterned loop, and Berber.

Low Pile

This is plush carpet cut down low near the weave of the carpet backing. It’s easier to vacuum and tracks less dirt from shoes. Yet, it’s soft on bare feet and has a nice give to it when stepped on. It’s good for bedrooms and low- to medium-traffic areas.

Plush

Plush is possibly the most popular carpet type because it’s extremely soft with a high pile. If you lay on it, it’s like stretching out on a pile of stuffed animals. In terms of comfort on your feet, it sinks down and around your feet, as you step on it and feels a lot like walking on thick memory foam slippers.

Plush isn’t recommended for high-traffic areas, but it works beautifully in bedrooms and living rooms where people typically sit on or lay down on the carpet. A thick piece of carpet foam underpad is installed underneath it to make the carpet itself even more comfortable.

Patterned Loop

Patterned loop carpet uses different colors and different cut levels to create a patterned look in the carpet. Customers like this for the unique look the carpet adds to any room.

Berber

Berber is common in offices because it is tightly twisted and has shallow carpet fiber loops. The loops loop backward into the carpet’s backing, and there’s almost no tufting. It feels rougher under your bare feet but is excellent for high-traffic areas and areas with a lot of casters rolling or heavy objects sitting on it. Customers like Berber for the ease of care it offers.
